WINTER SHELTER – Leeds 2017-18

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT

You are invited to a gathering at St Edmund’s Church, Roundhay on Wednesday 1st November to find out about plans for the 2017-18 shelter and to be encouraged to volunteer again or for the first time, whether this is in Roundhay or any other locality around the city.

Much has been learned by WYDAN, host bodies and volunteers in the running of the night shelter in the winters of 2015/16 and 2016/17. Feedback collected from guests and volunteers emphasises the value of the provision and yet wonders about the high level of human and material resources engaged. It could be that the cost is high – but there is no doubt that the value is inestimable to asylum seekers who find themselves destitute, often suddenly.

Do come along to hear from representatives of WYDAN, the referral agencies, asylum seekers and experienced volunteers regarding the processes, the difficulties faced and their effects on people.

Be prepared to be moved by what you hear, even if you have been here before, and to take away a refreshed or new wish to play your part. Our communities are so blessed and all that is asked is that we give of our time and love.

Proceedings will start at 7.30 pm (doors open at 7.00) – tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. The aim will be to finish by 9 pm or soon after.

The address is St Edmund’s Church, Lidgett Park Road, LS8 1JN. If the car park is full, there is plenty of parking in local streets. The pedestrian entrance is from North Park Avenue, on the north side of the building.
